March 8, 2008 James Milowski~Suffolk County Correction Officers Association Suffolk County, NY Correction Officers "took it off" for a great cause Saturday, March 8, 2008 when they helped raise over $5,500.00 for childhood cancer research via the "St. Baldrick's Foundation". 35 officers from the maximum security facility in Riverhead, NY took in pledges to have their locks shorn at Tommy's Place in Rocky Point, Long Island as part of the national St. Baldrick's Day effort which helps raise millions of dollars a year to fight cancer in children. Every year thousands of locations across America host the foundation, wherein barbers and volunteers give of their time (and hair) for this most worthy cause. Tommy's Place has hosted this event for several years, and is also a favorite spot for officers on their off duty time, so it seemed like a perfect fit. Corrections Sergeant Kevin Flaherty, who organized this years Correction Officer efforts, hopes to plan an even bigger and better event for next year. "We kind of got into this late this year, but we raised some decent cash." Kevin said. "My hope for next year is to get even more officers involved and raise even more." For Corrections organizations looking for a great cause to bolster their public relations endeavors, this is a great event to sponsor. To learn more about how you can become an event sponsor, or make a donation you can visit them on the web at www.stbaldricks.org. |

The ACO President's Message - January 2008
ACO’s first year has finally come to a close and it has been far better than even the most optimistic of us could have hoped for. We’ve been directly involved in rallies in Washington D.C., New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts, unfair labor practice hearings in DC, disciplinary hearings in Alaska, arbitrations in Rhode Island and New York, privatization fights in Oklahoma, conferences in Wyoming, and union meetings around the nation. We’ve contributed to or helped establish nine Benevolent Funds in Alaska, DC, Delaware, Oregon, Wyoming, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and two in New York. Never before has an organization such as ours given money BACK to members to provide direct support and aid to Officers and their families in those jurisdictions that support us. We’ve donated thousands of dollars to these funds in our first year, thanks to your support.

WHAT IS A CORRECTION OFFICER? By James Milowski One of the most misunderstood and often misrepresented titles in law enforcement has always been that of a Correction Officer. Mostly represented by the entertainment media and Hollywood as that of a low level, knuckle-dragging thug who enjoys a sadistic nature in mistreating inmates and other innocent persons incarcerated in dungeon like prisons. Nothing could be further from the truth!
The men and women of today's Corrections are highly trained, dedicated law enforcement professionals in a rapidly changing and challenging feild. Today's Correction Officers must receive training in a vast array of diverse feilds such as modern mental health, sociology and criminal justice. Many jurisdictions are even now requiring candidates for the job to hold at least an associates degree to be considered for hire. |
